PROACON continues to be the leader in the execution of road tunnels in Mexico. The lastest project to be added to its portfolio of works is the construction of the Morelia road tunnel in the state of Michoacán.

The execution began in February and is expected to be completed within no more than 430 calendar days (July 2017). The contract, valued at 265.44 million pesos (15 million euros), was awarded by the Ministry of Communications and Transport of the Mexican government on 16 October 2015 and consists of the construction of a 0.7 km-long tunnel, including its accesses, in the Ramal-Camelinas section of Morelia’s Southern By-pass.

PROACON has obtained the Potencia Awards for Public Work Machinery and Civil Engineering in the category of tunnels for the construction of the cut-and-cover tunnel and installations forming part of the Second Access to Tijuana Beaches Project, in the Mexican state of Baja California.

The project, tendered by the Mexican government's SCT (Department of Communications and Transportation) comprises the construction of a 360-metre highway cut-and-cover to house one lane in each direction, and some 500 metres of installations, with the whole operation subject to a geographical fault dictating the construction procedure, and requiring the successful incorporation of complex technical solutions to avoid slope collapse.

The TPI Group announced the winning projects of the Ninth Potencia Awards at an awards ceremony held on 19 November at the Real Casino in Madrid. The Awards aim to recognise every year the latest advances in machinery and the development in infrastructure projects carried out by Spanish construction companies around the world.

PROACON is currently the leading company specialising in underground works and foundations in Mexico and Guatemala in terms of kilometres built. It also has bases in Spain, Peru and Norway.

The CEMEX Awards acknowledge the best initiatives in architecture and construction in Mexico and the various countries where CEMEX operates. The winning projects are subsequently entered for the International Edition. The aim of the awards is to honour the finest construction projects, along with all the people who make them possible, such as architects, engineers, investors and builders, while also fostering innovation and promoting construction practices that generate improved spaces for social coexistence. Each year the awards organisers invite the involvement of projects completed a year in advance of the announcement. The jury is independent, and comprises an Honorary Jury and a Guest Jury, both made up of established specialists in the international architectural and construction profession.
